Housing options in Somers are ample and diverse. The real estate market has a little bit of something for everybody, from historic single-family homes and townhouses to modern co-ops and apartments. The Somers Hamlet Historic district centers around the famed Elephant Hotel. Like many upstate towns and hamlets, Somers has its own collection of large estates with sprawling acreage. The most attractive feature of Somers is its rural-suburban atmosphere. Residents enjoy ample green space and a neat system of public parks and recreation centers. Family-friendly Muscoot Farm park offers seasonal hayrides, farm tours, and an extensive network of walking trails. Lasdon Park boasts over two hundred acres of dense woods, manicured gardens, and spacious meadows with walking trails and athletic courts. Somers has a main shopping thoroughfare with a mix of big chains and smaller mom and pop shops and markets, but you will need a car to get there from the residential district. The town has a rich and unique history. Known as the “cradle of the American circus,” Hachaliah Bailey built the Elephant Hotel in honor of his famous elephant Old Bet, who toured with him during the early nineteenth century. Currently, the building serves as the Somers Town Hall. Visitors flock to this significant landmark to enjoy a glimpse into the town’s history and celebrate the development of the American circus.
